What's the point of having a short fiction contest celebrating H.G. Wells if it doesn't allow science fiction? That's probably what a lot of potential entrants in Reg Turnill's short story contest were thinking. Turnill, a 94-year-old former journalist who once interviewed Wells himself, received a bunch of alien-invasion stories in last year's contest. So this year, he decided to ban science fiction from the contest for writers under 25, which carries a £1,000 prize. He also required entries be handwritten. But now that he's received no entries, he's decided to relax the rules, allowing science fiction and just giving extra points for handwritten entries. [Kent News via Boing Boing]

The Wind in the Willows teaser online
http://www.filmstalker.co.uk/archives/2010/07/the_wind_in_the_willows_teaser.html
There's a teaser appeared for The Wind in the Willows, the new version of the story which is set to come from the director Ray Griggs and the New Zealand Weta team. It is short, features little actual footage, but does showcase some of the effects we're going to see.
The sad thing is the final shot for me. While the appearance of Toad looks cool, the last moment doesn't look that good and doesn't feel that great for the character. ...Visit Filmstalker for the full story. Restricted feeds to protect content.

Eureka S04E02 – A New World
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Eoghanncom/~3/tjKRr05Pigk/eureka-s04e02-a-new-world
In the first episode of this new season of Eureka, the writers basically spent the entire time setting up a new reality for our protagonists. At first I wasn’t sure if this was going to be a one week thing, but it seems it will at least span the season. And on the strength of A New World, the second episode of the season, that’s a good thing. Slamming SyFy seems to be the hot thing in fanboy circles lately and they certainly make themselves an easy target. But amongst all that ego bolstering sound and fury it’s easy to ignore the fact that they have carved out a little niche for themselves. With shows like Haven, Warehouse 13 and of course Eureka they are offering sci-fi subject matter on a lower budget by setting them at least mainly in the “real” world. Eureka isn’t designed to be too challenging. It’s an hour of entertainment where they throw a bunch of science concepts together to give us a threat of the week. What makes it work is really the interaction of the appealing characters. But after 3 years, things had become a little samey. And then they rebooted… This is still the Eureka that I’ve enjoyed for several years, just twisted around a bit. The show was never really about the plots, but about the characters and now our protagonists are presented with new challenges and dilemmas. It’s not a challenging show, but it is fun and I look forward to watching the rest of the season. Related articles by Zemanta

Gatchaman new footage online
http://www.filmstalker.co.uk/archives/2010/07/gatchaman_new_footage_online.html
Last we heard was that Gatchaman, the new CG film based on the original animé cartoon which was sold to the west as Battle of the Planets, wasn't going to happen as the studio behind the film, Imagi Studios, was in financial trouble.
News has arrived though that the studio has actually managed to recover, well done them, and through some new backing and clever business strategy are once again back in business. Imagi were behind TMNT and Astro Boy, and Gatchaman was lined up to be their next film. ...Visit Filmstalker for the full story. Restricted feeds to protect content.

Robert C Cooper leaving Stargate Universe
http://www.denofgeek.com/television/542343/robert_c_cooper_leaving_stargate_universe.html
One of the stalwarts of Stargate, Mr Robert C Cooper, is leaving the franchise…Stargate veteran Robert C Cooper, the man who co-created Stargate Universe and has worked on the show in its many forms - having been executive producer on both SG-1 and Atlantis - is leaving the show. The news was announced by Joseph Mallozzi, another of Stargate Universe's executive producers, on his blog. Cooper has since told Gateworld that "I'm not leaving completely, actually - just stepping back to more of a consulting role for the end of this season." He will retain an executive producer credit on season two, given that most of it is already developed, and he's writing three episodes of the new season, directing one. You can read more on the story at Gateworld here. See also:

Promo – BBC's Sherlock
http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/tvovermind/tvnews/~3/WeSUbK5rXHc/26411
BBC's latest adaptation of the beloved character Sherlock Holmes premieres on Sunday 25 July, 21:00 on BBC One. The show will air in the United States on PBS' "Masterpiece," though an exact date is unknown. Co-created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the new Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as his loyal friend, Doctor John Watson. Rupert Graves plays Inspector Lestrade. The iconic details from Conan Doyle's original books remain – they live at the same address of 221b Baker Street, have the same names and, somewhere out there, Moriarty is waiting for them. Steven Moffat says: "Conan Doyle's stories were never about frock coats and gas light; they're about brilliant detection, dreadful villains and blood-curdling crimes – and frankly, to hell with the crinoline. Other detectives have cases, Sherlock Holmes has adventures, and that's what matters."
