If you’ve been paying any sort of attention then really this confirmation isn’t exactly a surprise. Ever since Thanos appeared in the mid-credits teaser for The Avengers, it’s been clear where Marvel is heading and the references to further infinity stones in Thor: The Dark World and hints in what we’ve already seen in Guardians of the Galaxy continued to lay out the breadcrumbs.
That Thanos would make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy is just common sense based on what we’ve already seen on screen and what Marvel are hinting at in their comicbook prequel to the movie. But he’s still more the ultimate villain, not the current villain.
Clearly Avengers 3 is intended to wrap up this initial giant storyline before we move onto the next phase in Marvel’s ever growing plans (mapped out up to 2028 last I heard).
Oh and Gunn also released this new photo from Guardians of the Galaxy. The Guardians look a little grumpy here. And I don’t blame them. Yellow really isn’t their color.
