Well in truth not very much yet.
We know it’s a 6 hour mini-series and we know it’s going to air in the 4th quarter of 2014. Which is a format and timeslot that the channel used to use every year for what was generally their strongest material.
While they weren’t all universally excellent the list of SyFy’s mini-series includes Battlestar Galactica, Dune, Alice and Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars. So the format and timing is definitely encouraging.
Ascension’s script has been written by Phillip Levens whose writing credits include Smallville, Wolf Lake and Knight Rider. None of which are exactly jumping out at me. However, tv writing being what it is, it’s hard to assess a writers ability based on what made it to the screen.
More promising is the description of the premise of the mini-series:
Set onboard starship Ascension. In 1963, the U.S. government launched a covert space mission sending hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage aboard the Ascension to populate a new world. Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return, the mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship’s population to question the true nature of their mission.
That’s a scenario that’s rife with potential. SyFy haven’t announced any casting details yet, but if they plan to air in November/December I assume they will be going into production quite soon.
Sounds like something worth keeping an eye on.
