My Klout Experiment

So in yet more proof that how Klout works is some form of magic (or random number generator) I have been tracking it for a few days since my influence experiment.

You guys were helpful enough to boost my influence score for Doctor Who, but immediately afterwards my Network Impact score plummeted while my overall Klout score remained unchanged.

Well today, my Klout score rose by 2, all the way to 75. My True Reach jumped from 12K to 18K and my Network Impact resurrected itself all the way to 64 from it's recent low of 13. That's 18 points higher than when the experiment started.

And what does all this mean? Haven't the foggiest idea!

  1. Klout is pretty opaque about what it all means. I'm not sure it means anything, to be honest.

  2. It means Klout has us believing their numbers mean something :)

  3. Ah, it is indeed mysterious. I know after their initial recalibration of their formulas, my Klout, which had been pretty good, dropped like a rock. Klout decided my network of people were not pulling their own weight, apparently. (I'm sorry, Klout, but I LIKE those people.) Then it added G+ into its calculation mix and POOF– my Klout is back up again and rising. What the heck?!

  4. the 13 is a glitch I am pretty sure ~ my network impact also fell to 13 now it's bounced to 54

  5. Klout is an odd duck.

When I remember to tweet a bunch, it really jumps. As I spend most of my time on G+, it tends to stay reasonably constant in the high-40's / low-50's.

  6. Funny thing is, Klout apparently likes Tweets but only those that are to everybody. Interaction Tweets with other Twitter peeps seem to be largely irrelevant to Klout. As if the social part of social media is all RTs and clickthrus and not the individual human communicative element.

  7. I think it's all about how widely your message is broadcast. For G+ they're mainly measuring +1s and shares it seems like.

  8. +1s, comments and reshares. Nail on the head +Eoghann Irving .

And I agree with +Jenn Thorson about public vs. "private" tweets. They seem more interested in how often you tweet and how often your tweets are RT'd.

  9. It's funny, too, because it's not really an accurate measurement. You could have 100 people respond to your tweet without RTing it. But Klout is in it for the distance, I guess.

  10. Well it's primarily aimed at the social marketing crowd I think. So volume speaks louder.

  11. My personal observation is that I seem to always get big bumps on Tuesday night/ Wednesday mornings. I know nothing about Klout, but my guess is they only update G+ stats once a week.

  12. Ah, you guys are right– I just checked Klout my Network suddenly is WAY up today. Something must have been corrected.

  13. Yeah its network impact that was tweaked, seems like it jumped up 20 or more points for a lot of people.

  14. Since posting on this thread yesterday, my klout score dropped 10 points in one day. I smell conspiracy.

  15. Mine too actually.

  16. I, for one, welcome out benevolent klout overlords, they are sagacious and callipygian.
